Student
Welfare
At
'545' we endeavour to provide the best possible learning environment
that we can for our students. The school motto is "We Care"
and this is exemplified in the promotion and nurturing of a caring
school environment. We believe that students learn best when they
feel safe, are happy, and feel valued as people. We deliver a
number of programs that are targeted at ensuring our students
needs are met in this important area of student welfare.
Student
Management
545
has a whole school approach to student management.
Students in all classes are involved in the setting of class rules
based on the Assertive Discipline model and all teachers who come
to 545 are trained in this approach. It doesn't matter which teacher
the child sees, the approach is the same - it focuses on the positives,
lots of class rewards for doing the right thing, and agreed consequences
for breaches of class or school rules.
All
classrooms operate on rewards systems that encourage students
to act responsibly. These usually involve the class choosing a
reward if they meet a certain class target eg. marbles in the
jar, points, or stickers on a chart etc. Rewards range from a
casual day or special lunch to 'lucky dips' in the class at the
end of each week.
Yard
structure
The school grounds have a combination of designated playgrounds
for Prep & Junior students and also for Middle and Senior
students. We also have separate play equipment for theses age
groups, and shared playground areas so that younger and older
students can mix and play, if they wish.
The playground is supervised by three yard duty teachers, before
and after school, as well as at recess and lunchtimes
Anti
Bullying
The
school has a zero tolerance to bullying. Students are informed
of what bullying is, through social skills lessons in each grade
throughout the year. The school acts promptly when staff witness
any bullying issues, or when they are drawn to the attention of
staff. The school has a detailed anti bullying policy, available
to parents on request.
School
Chaplain
In 2007 the school successfully applied for a federal government
grant to employ a School Chaplain. Our School Chaplain's name
is Shelley Ogden.
Her
role consists of, but is not limited to, the following:
" Being available to providing pastoral care and counselling
with students, staff and families.
" Coordinate 'Seasons for Growth' grief programs with identified
students
" Assist the school with crisis intervention and trauma debriefing.
See
our School Chaplain Page, for more details
First
Aid
545
has 14 staff trained in Level 2 first aid. Two staff are timetabled
for duty each day during recess and lunchtime to administer First
aid , if required. During lesson times the administration staff
are always on-call during lesson times.
All students who attend the first aid room are provided with a
'Sick Bay Notification slip' so parents are aware that they have
been treated in first aid room. In cases of head or facial injuries,
parents are contacted, even if the incident is minor.
Social
Skills
Sequential
Social Skills program taught at all grade levels
Specific social skills are taught at different levels of the school
so that students know how to successfully interact and cooperate
with their peers, and the adults with whom they come into contact.
Peer
Support (Buddies Program)
Prep students and their grade 6 buddies are timetabled to meet
and participate in activities together throughout the school year.
Buddies also assist prep students in the yard at recess and lunchtimes
early in the year by creating games and helping them to join in
and make friends.
Peer
Assistant Leaders (PALS)
Senior school students are trained as peer assistants to help
junior students in playground to participate in positive games,
and to develop friendships with students their own age.
Four senior students are timetabled each week to provide this
support to students in the junior playground.
